Outboard Articulated Systems

In this video, which compares two 8 metre sport boat, the Seascape 27 and the Saphire 27, we can see again the advantage of having the outboard on some kind of articulated arm. This allows the outboard to swing directly from a storage locker in the cockpit sole to the outboard well. No need to haul the outboard out of a locker and to fiddle trying to attach it to a bracket…. I wrote about a similar system on the Farr 25a few days ago.

The one on the Seascape 27, with it’s articulated flap to cover the outboard well seems more ergonomic than the system on the Saphire 27 with it’s removable outboard well cover that then needs to be awkwardly stored in the sole locker. However the solution on the Saphire 27 might come into it’s own in heavier weather or at high speeds, as it looks like it plugs the outboard well much better…

Another difference is that the sole locker opens laterally on the Seascape 27 and forward on the Saphire 27. The lateral opening seems better – the view forward is less obstructed and it seems less likely that the locker cover will fall on your head when you are handling the outboard…
